Netflix Makes a Documentary About Billion-Dollar Crypto Money Launderers

Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan and her husband, Ilya Lichtenstein, were charged this week with conspiring to launder 119,754 bitcoins. These were stolen in the 2016 Bitfinex hack. What’s more, Netflix is making a documentary about them.

Stolen Crypto Was Worth $63.7 Million

At the time of the hack, the stolen crypto was worth about $63.7 million. Today, it’s worth over $5 billion. Morgan and Lichtenstein managed to launder about 25,000 bitcoins that are now worth about $1.08 billion.

This is the largest financial seizure ever led by the Department of Justice. Once special agents entered Lichtenstein’s account, they found the keys to the wallet that contained 94,000 bitcoins stolen from Bitfinex.

Morgan and Lichtenstein used fake identities to purchase gold and invest in NFTs. If they get convicted, they will face up to 25 years in prison.

Netflix got involved, calling this the largest financial crime case in history. The streaming service hurried the project up, inviting Chris Smith to direct the docuseries.

Smit has already worked on multiple projects that covered high-profile scams and crimes. He directed the Netflix documentary about the Fyre Festival and the docuseries about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
